If you’ve been reading my blog or following me on Instagram, then you know that I have been wearing a lot of neutrals lately. Today is no exception! I feel like a chambray shirt is one of the most versatile items that you can have in your wardrobe, and I definitely get a lot of wear out of mine (last seen here). I paired my chambray shirt with black skinny jeans and neutral accessories for an effortlessly chic look.
One reason for my transition to neutral-heavy outfits has been because I feel like my style has changed over the past year. If you look at my posts from this time last year, then you’ll notice more colorful and preppy outfits than what I have been wearing more recently. Another reason behind my neutral addiction lately is that I’m trying to downsize my closet. I own way too many clothes and don’t wear the majority of them. I know that I have been buying more clothes lately, but I have been buying more neutrals, which will fit into a long term wardrobe better than the ‘animal of the year‘ sweater (I own seven animal sweaters…way too many).
Part of my problem is that I used to be such an impulsive shopper. I would see something that I thought was cute and just put it in my cart. I have resolved that issue (for the most part) by creating a mental shopping criteria checklist. My first criteria is that I think about the item for more than five minutes before purchasing it. If I’m in the store, I won’t put the item in my cart and will look around some more. When I’m finished looking, I’ll think about whether I still want that item. Then I’ll look at all of the items that I want and prioritize them based on if I ‘need’ that item (I say ‘need’ because I clearly don’t need anymore clothes).
My second trick is to shop online. When I can actually see the total cost of my items adding up, it makes me think twice about whether I’m willing to spend the money or not. I also made a list of items that I don’t currently have. I prioritize purchasing those over more frivolous items (i.e., no more animal sweaters). My final criteria is that the item has to be on sale, or I have to have a coupon code. I find it so frustrating when I order an item and then a few days after I receive it find that it is on sale. I use this website to check for coupon codes, and it has saved me so much money!
