It’s mid-August, which means that it’s officially back to school season. I’ve recently written about my college dorm room decorating tips and shared my 5 fashion tips for college girls. I thought I would continue the college theme this week by sharing my college wardrobe essentials.
You’ve probably noticed that the space is extremely limited in your dorm room closet. That’s why it’s important to make sure you get the most out of that space by cutting your wardrobe down to the essentials. These are the items that I wore throughout my undergrad, and still turn to in graduate school. Keep reading for the 15 wardrobe essentials every college girl needs.
15 Wardrobe Essentials Every College Girl Needs
1. Basic T-Shirts
Basic t-shirts are a my number one college wardrobe essential. Pair them with jeans for a simple outfit on those days that you hit snooze one too many times or with a skirt for a chic outfit when you’re hanging with your besties. I would recommend having at least 6-8 basic t-shirts in your closet.

2. Chambray Shirt
A chambray shirt is great because it goes with everything and it’s super versatile. It can be worn year round and can be dressed up or dressed down. I would recommend having 1-2 chambray shirts in your closet.

3. Plaid Shirt
Like chambray shirts, plaid shirts are also really versatile. Wear it with jeans, layer it under a sweater, or pair it with a skirt for an unexpected outfit. I would recommend having 1-2 plaid shirts in your college wardrobe.

4. Cozy Sweater
Lecture halls are known for being really cold, so cozy sweaters are a must! I would recommend having 4-5 sweaters in your closet for college.

In my fashion tips for college girls post, I wrote about keeping a cardigan in your backpack for when it gets too cold in class. I would recommend having 2-3 cardigans in your closet for college.
Cardigans to Love:
In the mid fall and early spring months, you’re going to want a jacket. I would recommend having at least 1-2 jackets in your closet.
Jackets to Love:
When winter rolls around, a warm coat is definitely a must. Since space is limited in your closet, I would recommend only having 1-2 coats in your closet.
Coats to Love:
I wear jeans at least 4 days a week, so they’re definitely a necessity in my eyes. Dark wash skinny jeans are my favorite, but I would also recommend having a pair of black jeans and white jeans in your closet as well. All together, I would recommend having 5-7 pairs of jeans in your closet for college.

9. Denim Shorts
A pair of denim shorts is great for when it’s still warm out, or when you’re hanging out with your friends on the weekend or after class. I would recommend having 1-2 pairs of denim shorts in your college wardrobe.

My style is very feminine, so I love to wear skirts. If you don’t love skirts as much as I do, I would still recommend having at least one for special events. If you do love skirts, I would recommend having 2-3 in your closet.
Skirts to Love:
I love to wear dresses because it’s an entire outfit in one piece. Again, my personal style is quite feminine, so if you don’t like to wear dresses I would still recommend having at least one in your closet for special occasions. If you love dresses as much as I do, I would recommend having 3-4 in your college wardrobe.

12. Crossbody Bag
My favorite type of purse has to be crossbody bags. They’re perfect for college because they’re not bulky and the perfect size to carry all of your necessities. I would recommend having 1-2 crossbody bags for college.

You need a backpack for college, but it doesn’t have to be ugly! Just be sure to check the dimensions of the backpack before you buy it to make sure your laptop will fit in it.

14. Comfortable Shoes
You’re going to be doing a lot of walking in college, especially if your campus is large. Be sure to have at least two pairs of comfortable shoes in your closet. Your feet will appreciate it!
Comfortable Shoes to Love:
I probably wear boots more than any other type of shoe to school. I would recommend having 1-2 pairs of ankle boots or booties and 1-2 pairs of riding boots or over-the-knee boots in your college closet.
