Move-in day is a couple of weeks away for my university, so I thought this would be the perfect time to share my dorm room decorating tips with you all. If you’re an incoming freshman or a returning student who is going to be living in the dorms this year, then this post is for you. Heck, I even use all of these tips for decorating my apartment, so if you’re not a college student there are still some great decorating tips here for you!
Whether you’re socializing or studying, you’re going to be spending a lot of time in your dorm room this semester. Since this will be your home away from home for a while, you’ll probably want to make sure your space looks and feels inviting and cozy. Your dorm room will most likely be quite small and will be used for different functions so the decor will definitely have a big impact on the overall feel of the space.
I also realize that after purchasing all of the big necessities for your room, you probably don’t have a large budget left for decorating. Don’t worry, almost all of the tips below are budget friendly and these items can be purchased (or gifted) over time. Keep reading for my budget friendly dorm room decorating tips.
8 Decorating Tips for a Chic Dorm Room:
1. Start with Neutral Bedding
Your bed is going to take up a lot of space in your room. To keep the room feeling light and airy opt for neutral bedding. Believe me, neutral bedding doesn’t have to be boring. Go for a solid, light-colored comforter that has a fun texture, or a neutral-colored comforter that has a subtle print instead.

2. Have Fun with Throw Blankets
You’re going to want a cozy blanket to snuggle up with while you’re studying, so why not have one that looks cute too? I love decorating with throws that have a playful detail or unexpected texture. It’s a small, inexpensive way to add a bit of character to your space!

3. Add Lamps for Form and Function
You’re going to need a lamp for your nightstand or desk. Why not get one that looks chic? Details like a marble base or fun geometric shape will make a big difference and set your room apart from all of the others!

4. Add Character with Pillows
The fastest and cheapest way to add character to a space is with pillows. This is where you can let your personality shine! I like to keep things neutral and add interest with fun patterns and texture, but you could certainly add pop of color if that’s more your style.

6. Get Stylish with Storage
Everyone needs storage, but instead of using those cheap plastic containers that everyone has, why not get stylish with your storage? Use fun wicker baskets to hold your shoes and bags and decorative containers to keep your desk tidy and chic.

7. Add a Rug for a Cozy Feel
You will most likely have ugly carpet or flooring in your room. While you can’t change out the flooring, you can add a rug for a cozy, personalized feel! Just be sure to check with your roommate before buying one that will creep into her half of the room.

8. Add Personality with Trinkets
Space is going to be limited, so I wouldn’t go overboard with trinkets, but they are a great way to add your unique style to your dorm room. Whether it’s a small sentimental object or a fun item that your purchased just because, these small trinkets can add so much personality to your space.
