Happy New Year! To celebrate the new year, I wanted to share my favorite posts from 2017, some life updates, and my 2018 blogging resolutions with you all. Last year was filled with so many great memories, and I have a feeling that 2018 is going to be quite the year for me.
I am graduating with my Master of Science degree in May of this year, and then my boyfriend and I will be moving away from the Dayton area. I’m originally from Texas, but I have lived in Ohio for over 10 years now so this will be a big change for me. We are hoping to move somewhere on the east coast (we have been looking into North Carolina specifically) but it will really depend on where we can find jobs.
Jobs in conservation are really competitive, so I’m trying to keep an open mind about different kinds of jobs that I would be interested in. My ideal career would be doing research and community outreach for a nonprofit marine conservation group, but I know that is incredibly specific and pretty unlikely to find.
A LOOK BACK AT 2017
Last year I had so many wonderful opportunities come my way, and got to meet and work with so many incredible people. My biggest and most memorable moment from last year had to be meeting and working with Lauren Conrad for her LC Lauren Conrad Festival Collection last May! You can read more about the details and my amazing experience in this blog post.
Another opportunity that I had this year was modelling for a Avenue Twenty-One, a local boutique, for their fall lookbook. I also worked with them again on a few other projects, like my 2017 holiday guide and a couple of blog posts. I love supporting local small business owners!
A couple of fellow Dayton fashion bloggers (including my now friend Jen from Style in Shape) and eight local small businesses partnered together for a Small Business Saturday post and giveaway. It was so wonderful meeting and supporting so many local girlbosses!
I also got to work with a lot of really awesome companies, like TRESemme, Kenra, Harry’s, HASK, and Derma E just to name a few. It was quite the year for A Classic Ambition! None of it would have been possible without each and every one of my wonderful readers and followers. Thank you all so much for your continued support! It means the world to me!!
MY 2018 BLOGGING RESOLUTIONS
1. IMPROVE MY PHOTOGRAPHY
My boyfriend takes most of my outfit photos and he is so sweet and patient with me. He does a really great job at taking my photos, but there are definitely things that we can improve on.
I’ve found that I use the same 2-3 shoot locations over and over again. This is mostly for convenience so I can change and shoot multiple outfits in one day. It does seem to get pretty boring visually though, so I’d like to scout for more locations and improve my photography in that way.
I would also really like to invest in a 50 mm f/1.4 fixed lens for my camera to get more of a bokeh effect on my photos. While I think my camera is good (I use a Nikon D3300), I think we’re a bit limited by our lenses. I’ve also looked into the 50 mm f/1.8 lens because it’s significantly cheaper than the f/1.4. If you have either one of these lenses let me know which one you think we should get!
A couple of months ago I decided to invest in Lightroom and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I used to edit all of my photos using an app on my phone and it would take forever and the quality just wasn’t the best. Now I shoot in RAW and I’m able to batch edit my photos which saves so much time. If you’re a blogger and you haven’t invested in Lightroom yet, I highly recommend it!! My goal is to learn more about Lightroom and to get better at editing this year.
2. EXPAND MY REACH AND CONNECT WITH MY READERS
I keep track of my blog statistics and social media followings every month. Aside from that I haven’t put as much effort into growing as I probably should. Your following is pretty important as a blogger, but there is a fine line between focusing on growth and obsessing over your numbers.
I started working on this goal a couple of months ago by setting aside time to respond to every comment. It’s kind of common sense, but if someone takes the time to write a comment then you should make the time to respond. I would always mean to respond but sometimes I would forget and it would slip through the cracks. By setting aside time for that specific purpose I’m hoping to connect with as of you as I can.
To expand my reach on my social media channels, my goal is to post consistently and to be smarter about when I post. I’ve read so many great articles about when you should post and how frequently you should post on each of your accounts. My plan is to actually use that information! If you’re a blogger, then you should check out this article which is filled with great information.
3. POST MORE CONSISTENTLY
I have been blogging since 2013, but I just started blogging more consistently in March of last year. I’ve seen a lot of growth since I’ve become more consistent, but I can still definitely improve.
My goal is to post at least four times a week (Monday – Thursday). I know it’s possible, because I’ve done it many times in the past, but I need to get better at it. I keep a blogging editorial calendar, which has helped a lot. I’m also going to try to be even better with time management by keeping a daily and weekly schedule.
Whew!! Okay, this post was way longer than I intended it to be. If you’ve made it this far, thank you so much for reading!
